Hello to you, whoever is reading this! You’ve probably never even heard about Donbass until several months ago. And right now you are absolutely fed up with this region, because it’s all over the news and the news is always about shootings and killings. Now imagine living there. Why is all this happening? To cut a long story short, because we are speaking Russian and our government wants us not to. They believe everything Ukrainian is superior. We disagree. They shoot us.I am from Odessa. You may have heard of it on the news too - a large fire with dozens of people burnt alive around May 2? That’s us. We used to be called the Capital of Laughter here, you know. It’s more like the Capital of Fear now. Armed people in the streets, and they are not policemen or soldiers - nobody knows who they are. But they are carrying Ukrainian flags and machine guns. And in Donbass nearby, they have artillery fire as a sound effect around breakfast and children go to school because there is an underground cellar there and it’s safer to spend a day in a cellar these days. I keep hoping for the Doctor to show up and clean up this mess but it’s obviously a fixed point in time or he’s just off to Metebelis Three again. So, please, help me spread the word. There is no excuse for the government to open fire on its citizens whatever the circumstances. It is wrong to arrest and kill people who survived in a fire just because they could name the arsonists. If we die tomorrow, the world should know the names of our murderers.

They shoot us.

I am from Odessa.

"Do you think something could have got into the ship? … The doors were open."
… “It’s not very logical, is it?”
… “No it isn’t.  But does it have to be?  I mean things aren’t always very logical, are they?”

(Barbara and the Doctor in “The Edge of Destruction”.)

Episode Summary: A blinding flash of light strikes though the TARDIS, stranding the ship literally in the middle of nowhere, and leaving our travelers confused, paranoid, and ready to turn upon one another.

Barbara: I think perhaps we’ve been given nothing but clues.
Ian: Have we?—Like the food machine, you mean!
Barbara: Yes!
Ian:  It registered empty, but it wasn’t!
Barbara:  But the clock is the most important.  It made us aware of time.
Susan:  By taking time away from us.
Barbara:   Yes.  And it replaced time by the light on the fault indicator!
Ian:  Yes it did!
Doctor:  It, it, what do you mean?  My machine can’t think.
Barbara:  You say it has a built in defence mechanism.
Doctor:  Yes it has.
Barbara:  Well that’s where we’ve been wrong.  Originally the machine wasn’t at fault, we were.  And it’s been trying to tell us so ever since!
Ian:  A machine that can think for itself?
Barbara:  Yes!

Barbara works out what is going on.  And what’s more, this is the first time that the idea that the TARDIS might be sentient is expressed.
